Master Dick Skantz history

Dick was born 1965 in Stockholm. His interest for martial arts was lit early. He started Judo practice 1974 in Botkyrka, with Larry Edgren as his instructor, where he went 4-5 times a week for 3 years. After those 3 years he started Shotokan karate under Leif Söderlund, Anders Rydelius and Ramon Malave in Stockholm Karate Klubb, which back then was one of the most prominent clubs. He went for practice 5 times a week, 2 hours a day.

Later in spring 1980 he met Master Yu at an Asian friend’s house. When Master Yu found out that he practiced Karate, he asked if he could try out Dicks abdominal muscles. Master Yu first hit him with a clenched fist which Dick could resist. He then asked if he could hit him with an open hand, and Dick fell flat to the floor. He told Dick that he was an TKD and Hapkido instructor and asked if he wanted to study with him. Dick was a little reluctant at first but changed his mind when Master Yu showed his open hand again.

Dick started under M. Yu in summer 1980. They exercised 3 hours Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 5 hours on Sundays. Back then they practiced a mix of TKD and HKD. In 1987 Dick graduated to 1-dan in WTF-TKD and 1988 to 1-dan in American Hapkido federation.
He has teached since 1982 when he was assistant instructor and had the responsibility for Monday practice.

He trained under Master Mike when he was in Sweden 1988 and 1990. Mike helped him and two of his friends get the possibility to study under Grand Master Lim Hyun Soo by writing a recommendation. So 1992 Dick went to Korea. Dick had never met a person with stronger personality than Lim Hyun Soo, who made him realize that Martial arts is something he is going to maintain his entire life.

At this point Master Yu had moved to Göteborg, but he travelled to Stockholm as often as he could to exercise with his students. Dick was now head instructor for Jung moo Kwan in Stochholm. In 1993 Dick went to the World Championship in New York and took the International referee course.

In 1994 there were two schools in Stockholm, one in Vårby gård and one at Islandstorget. But in 1995 Vårby gård was closed due to fluctuating membership numbers, and all effort was put in the school at Islandstorget. When one of the instructors moved abroad in 1996 that school was closed as well. Dick got a lot of invitations to teach at different TKD schools in Stockholm after that, but since he lived in Järfälla he asked a friend who had a school there, if he needed help, and started to teach in Järfälla TKD klubb. All his HKD students and some TKD students followed.

His teacher Master Yu always encouraged him to practice with new people so he took part in different seminars and trained and teached in a lot of Stockholm’s schools as well as the rest of Sweden. He was a referee in the Swedish championship from 1988 to 2001 and was the main referee a number of times.

In 2005 Dick, M. Yu and his students from Malmö travelled to Korea to practice under GM. Lim where Dick felt like he was home again. In autumn he assisted M. Yu to graduate 5 of their students to 1-dan in Jung ki Kwan. Yu is both his friend and master since 25 years ago, and Dick still practice under him. Today he is 5-dan WTF TKD and 4-dan Jung ki Kwan HKD.

Our organisation is grounded upon voluntary membership and no fees, every instructor is in charge of his school and our only wish is to teach Hapkido.
